About Paula Rego: Crivelli's Garden Exhibition Catalogue

Accompanies the exhibition at the National Gallery, London, 20 July-29 October 2023 As the National Gallery's first Associate Artist in 1990-1, Dame Paula Rego (1935-2022) produced the monumental painting Crivelli's Garden, drawing inspiration from a fifteenth-century altarpiece by Carlo Crivelli in the collection. Rego challenged the dominance of the male gaze in Western art by populating the reimagined garden with courageous female figures from folklore and biblical history. The individuals were based on the likenesses of her friends and family, as well as members of National Gallery staff. This publication features an original short story, written by acclaimed novelist Chloe Aridjis in response to the painting, and an art historical essay by curator Priyesh Mistry. Among the illustrations are new photographs of Crivelli's Garden and Rego's preparatory studies, some of which have never been published. Paula Rego: Crivelli's Garden is the first book dedicated to this radical artwork and its celebration of storytelling. AuthorPriyesh Mistry is Associate Curator of Modern and Contemporary Projects at the National Gallery, London.Chloe Aridjis is a Mexican writer based in London. She is the author of three novels, one of which, Asunder, is inspired by the National Gallery.
